What is 5Rhythms? There are a hundred different ways to answer this question. Here are some ways that describe how the rhythms move through us: Flowing ~ From the ground up, we connect with the earth through our feet. We can try to let our bodies be fluid and imagine rivers flowing through us. With circular, constant movement, we invite into our bodies all that nurture and sustain us. Finally, we allow our entire body follow the fluid movement of our feet. Staccato ~ We begin to give our movements more definition. We focus on our exhale, and tap into our warrior selves. Elbows, knees, hips and shoulders begin to speak as our power centre is ignited. Often feeling fiery and alive, we become focused, and learn to communicate who we are and what we stand for through our bodies. We are here. This is us. Chaos ~ Finally, we can let it all go. The rhythm of surrender. We can stop thinking about circular vs. angular, feminine vs. masculine, right or wrong. Chaos is all of it and none of it. Chaos doesn't care what we look like or who our friends are. Chaos invites us to get out of our heads and become fully embodied - even if just for a moment. And so we let our head go, and this time our whole body follows the head - shaking, releasing, being wild + crazy, empty + full all at once: surrender. Lyrical ~ The lightness that we feel when we finally stop trying so hard. Lyrical is the joy of not having to push, not having to "try" anymore, and having the grace and awareness to just BE. Lyrical is found in our expansive breath, our softly opening wings, our playful and curious connection with those around us. Lyrical is the lightness of being that arrives after we have first nurtured ourselves (Flowing), then expressed and defined ourselves (Staccato), then released and emptied ourselves (Chaos). In Lyrical we can now begin to fill ourselves back up with the love + joy + self-acceptance most of us are seeking. Stillness ~ The rhythm where all of spirit lives. We come back to our breath. We remember who we are, and our place in the circle of life. We are invited to meditate on compassion and gratitude. Connected to the ethers, in Stillness we remember that there is no "you/I" or "us/them" as we are all one. We can rest in the stillness of this knowing, and in the fullness of our breath. We are home.
The 5Rhythms practice is at the same time an individual journey and a universal one. No two people will experience a Wave (when we dance the 5 rhythms from beginning to end) the same way, just as no two people have the same fingerprints. And yet the Wave follows a universal life cycle - from beginning, to middle, to end. You are invited to begin simply taking the first steps on your own path of self discovery and embodiment, and see what unfolds for you. There is no experience needed to practice the 5Rhythms. Just a willingness to explore the territory of your own body/mind/heart. There is no right way or wrong way to do this practice. Each + every move is exactly perfect for you and your process.
